Backend Software Engineer (AI Systems & Automation)

We are hiring an AI-enabled, product-oriented Backend Software Engineer to reinforce the core engineering backbone of a global, digital-first higher education platform.

This is a hybrid engineering and client-facing technical role, not a traditional backend position. A significant portion of your time will be spent directly engaging with a small set of high-value enterprise customers through Slack and Zoom. You will operate in real-time technical environments, collaborating with client-side engineers and internal stakeholders to deliver production-grade solutions across complex integrations and regulated workflows.

Clear, confident, camera-on communication with senior technical counterparts is a core operating requirement, not an optional skill.

The remainder of your time will focus on strengthening and evolving the internal platform by building scalable backend systems, embedding AI into production workflows, and shaping long-term architectural direction. AI is expected to be deeply integrated into your engineering practice, including hands-on use of tools such as Claude Code or equivalent AI coding assistants in real production contexts, not only for productivity but for system-level implementation.

This role requires full alignment with US business hours.

Why This Role Exists

Compensation is in USD and paid twice monthly on the 15th and 30th. The role includes standard paid time off and company holidays. It is fully remote, enabling flexible work from any location. The position offers high autonomy within a product-led engineering organization and direct exposure to enterprise customers operating in real-world production environments. It also provides the opportunity to influence long-term system architecture and AI-driven workflows.

Core Responsibilities
Enterprise Client Engineering and Technical Delivery

You will dedicate more than 60 percent of your time to direct engagement with enterprise accounts through Slack and Zoom. You will act as a technical bridge between client engineering teams and internal product engineering, designing and implementing backend integrations within regulated and high-complexity environments. You will translate enterprise requirements into robust, production-ready technical solutions while clearly communicating design decisions, constraints, and trade-offs with senior technical stakeholders.

AI-Native System Development

You will design and deliver backend systems with AI embedded into production workflows. You will leverage Claude Code or comparable AI engineering copilots as part of your daily development execution. You will build and enhance AI-powered product capabilities while identifying and operationalizing automation opportunities across both internal and client-facing systems. You will also contribute to evolving AI architecture standards and long-term system design direction.

Scalable Backend Architecture

You will design and maintain resilient backend services and APIs, working across distributed systems, databases, and cloud-native infrastructure. You will improve system reliability, performance, and operational observability while contributing to architectural decisions that impact long-term platform scalability.

End-to-End Product Ownership

You will own features and systems from design through deployment and iteration. You will collaborate closely with product and design teams to translate requirements into engineering execution. You will proactively identify system bottlenecks, risks, and inefficiencies while participating in roadmap planning and technical prioritization.

Engineering Excellence and Team Contribution

You will deliver clean, maintainable, and well-tested code while strengthening CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, and observability practices. You will participate in architectural reviews and technical decision-making and support other engineers through code reviews and mentorship.

Required Experience and Capabilities

You will bring at least four years of software engineering experience in product-driven environments, with a strong backend orientation and the ability to operate full-stack when required. You will have prior experience engaging directly with enterprise or high-value technical clients and a proven track record of integrating AI into production systems beyond experimental use. You will have hands-on experience with Claude Code or equivalent AI-assisted development workflows and strong system design capability across distributed systems, APIs, and data layers. You will be comfortable operating in fast-paced, scaling startup environments with a strong ownership mindset and the ability to work independently. Full availability during US business hours is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates proficient in TypeScript, Python, or Java, with experience in cloud infrastructure such as GCP, Spanner, Redis, or similar platforms. A strong academic background or equivalent technical foundation is advantageous, as is exposure to regulated industries or EdTech environments.

Advantageous Experience

Additional value is recognized in candidates who have built AI-powered user-facing features in production, contributed to platform modernization or large-scale refactoring initiatives, demonstrated technical leadership or mentorship capability, or operated in high-accountability, customer-facing engineering roles.
