Role Overview
The 3D Automation Designer will be responsible for creating detailed 2D and 3D layouts for warehouse automation and material handling systems.
This role will support sales, engineering, estimating, project management, and installation teams by turning customer requirements, site layouts, equipment drawings, and automation concepts into clear, buildable designs.
The ideal candidate has experience with MHE systems, warehouse layouts, conveyor design, automation equipment, and 3D modeling software. This person should understand how to design practical systems that can actually be installed in the field.
Key Responsibilities
Create 2D and 3D designs for warehouse automation and material handling systems.
Design layouts for conveyor systems, sortation systems, racking, mezzanines, platforms, pick modules, ASRS, VLMs, shuttles, AMRs/AGVs, and other MHE systems.
Prepare concept layouts, customer presentation drawings, sales support visuals, and project design packages.
Convert customer requirements, building drawings, site measurements, sketches, equipment drawings, and redlines into clean design layouts.
Support sales and estimating teams with early-stage automation concepts and layout options.
Create system layouts that show equipment locations, flow paths, clearances, pick/pack areas, workstations, elevations, platforms, access points, safety zones, and installation considerations.
Coordinate with engineers, project managers, sales teams, vendors, manufacturers, integrators, and site teams.
Review equipment drawings and vendor layouts to identify fit, clearance, access, and installation issues.
Assist with developing layouts that improve product flow, labour efficiency, space utilization, safety, and system performance.
Prepare drawings for customer review, estimating, engineering review, permitting support, fabrication coordination, installation, and as-built records.
Support field teams with drawing revisions, design clarifications, and site-condition updates.
Maintain proper file organization, drawing version control, and revision tracking.
Help develop MTLI standard drawing templates, automation layout standards, and 3D presentation formats.
Required Experience
3+ years of experience in 2D/3D design, automation design, MHE design, warehouse layout design, or industrial systems design.
Experience designing or drafting conveyor systems, sortation systems, warehouse automation, racking, mezzanines, platforms, or material handling layouts.
Strong experience with AutoCAD and at least one 3D design/modeling platform.
Ability to read and understand architectural drawings, structural drawings, warehouse layouts, equipment drawings, and MHE system drawings.
Ability to create clear plan views, elevations, sections, details, 3D views, and presentation layouts.
Strong understanding of warehouse operations, product flow, clearances, equipment footprints, and installation constraints.
Ability to work from sketches, redlines, PDFs, site photos, measurements, and customer requirements.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects at once.
Good communication skills and ability to work with sales, engineering, PMs, vendors, and field teams.
Preferred Experience
Experience with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, SolidWorks, SketchUp, Navisworks, Plant 3D, Fusion 360, Tekla, or similar design tools.
Experience with conveyor manufacturers, automation integrators, racking companies, warehouse consultants, or industrial contractors.
Experience designing systems for distribution centers, fulfillment centers, manufacturing facilities, e-commerce operations, or 3PL warehouses.
Experience with ASRS, AMRs/AGVs, robotic picking, sortation, pick modules, workstations, pack lines, pallet handling, case handling, and tote handling systems.
Experience creating customer-facing 3D visuals, renderings, walk-throughs, or concept presentations.
Experience coordinating with structural, mechanical, electrical, controls, and installation teams.
Experience with permit drawings, fabrication drawings, installation drawings, and as-built drawings is an asset.
