We are looking for a detail-oriented Adobe InDesign assistant to help create a series of professionally published instructional textbooks for public speaking and debate students.
This is a long-term remote project, likely lasting 9–12 months, with the possibility of continued work afterward. The books are for students from early elementary through high school, and the first major project is a colorful, kid-friendly textbook for Grades 3–5 featuring cartoon “SuperTeam” characters.
The ideal candidate is not just a general graphic designer, but someone who is comfortable working carefully inside InDesign: applying styles, following layout specifications, managing text-heavy pages, preparing print-ready files, and keeping a large book project organized.
Main Responsibilities
You will help our design team by:
-Creating textbook pages in Adobe InDesign based on detailed layout instructions
-Flowing manuscript text into book layouts
-Applying paragraph styles, character styles, object styles, and table styles consistently
-Building and reusing textbook components such as activity boxes, speech bubbles, motion cards, review sections, tables, callouts, and workbook exercises
-Formatting long instructional content so it is readable, clean, and age-appropriate
-Working with illustrations, icons, character art, and image placeholders
-Checking for overset text, spacing problems, inconsistent styles, and layout errors
-Preparing files for review and eventually for professional printing/publishing
-Making revisions based on feedback
Required Skills
Please apply only if you have strong experience with:
-Adobe InDesign
-Multi-page document layout
-Paragraph styles and character styles
-Parent/master pages
-Tables in InDesign
-Print layout and PDF export
-Careful formatting and revision work
-Following detailed design instructions
Helpful Additional Skills
These are not required, but would be a plus:
-Experience designing textbooks, workbooks, children’s books, educational materials, or training manuals
-Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop
-Experience preparing print-ready files
-Experience working with book grids, margins, bleed, and preflight checks
-Comfort working with Google Drive, Dropbox, or other shared file systems
-Strong English reading comprehension
Project Style
The books are instructional textbooks, not simple flyers or social media graphics. The work requires patience, consistency, and attention to small details.
Some pages will be colorful and kid-friendly, with cartoon characters, speech bubbles, activity boxes, and workbook-style exercises. Other books in the series will be more mature, like middle-school and high-school debate handbooks.
We will provide:
-Manuscripts
-Page-by-page design specifications
-Sample layouts and inspiration images
-Character art and illustrations when available
-Feedback and revision notes
You will help turn these materials into polished InDesign textbook layouts.
Ideal Candidate
You are a good fit if you:
-Are highly organized
-Can follow instructions carefully
-Notice small formatting inconsistencies
-Are comfortable revising work after feedback
-Can communicate clearly and reliably
-Have experience with long documents, not just single-page designs
-Care about making educational materials look professional and easy to use
Work Arrangement
-Remote position
-Need someone who can commit to 20-30 hours per week.
-Long-term project: approximately 9–12 months
-Flexible schedule, but regular communication and reliable deadlines are important
How to Apply
Please send:
-A short introduction about your InDesign experience
-Examples of multi-page documents you have designed or formatted
-Any textbook, workbook, magazine, booklet, or long-document samples
-Your expected hourly rate or monthly rate
-Your availability per week
-A short answer to this question:
What InDesign feature do you rely on most when formatting a long book or workbook, and why?
Applicants may be asked to complete a short paid test task using a sample textbook page.
